Create your own Radiant Angel

Create a beautiful mixed-media angel with shimmering gold leaf, jewels and vibrant colour — a unique artwork to treasure or give as a heartfelt gift.

Inspired by the embellishment techniques of Gustav Klimt and Andrew Logan, and the symbolic angels of Cecil Collins and William Blake, we’ll explore colour, texture and light to create an angel with personal meaning.

Everyone will create something entirely personal and unique to them.  Your angel might represent hope, remembrance, protection, gratitude or joy, or be inspired by someone you love, a beloved pet or a special memory. Or you might simply enjoy the pleasure of making something beautiful.

There is no template to copy.  Your angel will develop through your own ideas, choices and creative discoveries.

There is no single way to make an angel. You might be drawn to gold and sparkle, or prefer a quieter, more subtle approach. Through experimenting with colour, shapes, textures and materials, your own image will emerge.

What we’ll do

We’ll begin by looking at examples of contemporary assemblage and symbolic art, and exploring the materials and different ways of creating light, colour and texture.

You’ll develop your own angel on heavyweight mixed-media paper using watercolour, drawing and collage. Once your image has emerged, you’ll cut it out and mount it onto a prepared A5 birch plywood panel (A4 panels may be available on the day, subject to availability).

You’ll then embellish your work with gold leaf, jewels, beads, buttons, jewellery fragments, mirrors, decorative papers and found objects, exploring layering, texture and dimensional techniques to bring your angel to life.

I’ll demonstrate techniques and provide individual guidance throughout, with plenty of opportunity to experiment and develop your own ideas.

You’re welcome to bring

Two or three small objects that hold a special meaning for you to include into your piece, a piece of broken jewellery, a special bead or button, a charm, a shell or a tiny keepsake.

Objects don’t need to be valuable. Sometimes the simplest things carry the most meaningful stories. Bringing something is entirely optional.

Materials included

All materials are provided, including heavyweight mixed-media paper, watercolour and drawing materials, collage papers, a prepared A5 birch plywood panel, gold leaf, beads, jewels, mirrors and embellishments, together with the adhesives and equipment needed to complete your work.

About Lorna Carmen McNeill

Lorna Carmen McNeill is a mixed media and light artist, teacher and creative process facilitator. She studied Fine Art at Camberwell School of Art, Goldsmiths and The Art Academy, and has taught across higher and further education, the NHS, charitable organisations, community settings and corporate environments.

Her work is rooted in the understanding that creativity is far more than artistic skill—it is a way of being, perceiving and engaging with the world. Through her Awakening Creativity approach, Lorna creates supportive and inspiring environments where participants develop artistic confidence, technical skills and a deeper connection with their own innate creativity. As confidence grows, participants discover their own unique way of seeing, responding and making, allowing an authentic visual language to emerge naturally.
